The importance of pit valve integrity
Each aircraft comes into contact with the airport apron multiple times in a 24-hour period. The apron is where passengers board and disembark the aircraft, cargo and luggage are exchanged and it’s where aircraft refueling takes place.
It’s becoming increasingly important for aircraft refueling to be as quick as possible, so many commercial and military airports now use hydrant pit valves for refueling, which requires pipelines to be positioned under the apron.
To ensure safe operations, the pit valve in a hydrant point requires monthly integrity checks, but the current process carries many challenges.
