The Italian Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (Arera) is responsible for setting out Italy’s water regulations, defining performance commitments based on six macro indicators.
Arera has recently introduced a new macro indicator called “Water resilience” (M0) which is aimed at measuring technical quality of service and evaluate how effectively utilities handle the frequent stresses a water system is placed under at both a local (M0a) and higher level (M0b).1,2
Effective from 2024, M0 requires Italian water utilities to:
- Prioritize long term planning for sustainable water resource management
- Adapt in anticipation of climate related challenges
- Measure water consumption in relation to growing water scarcity concerns
- Invest in infrastructure to reduce water loss, such as leak detection, and diversify water sources, for example desalination
- Improve monitoring systems and reporting capabilities
In anticipation of these performance commitments, Atmos has appointed Aquanexa as its Italian representative to make its leak detection solutions available to the region’s water utilities.
Detecting new and existing leakage across the Italian water network
There’s a strong requirement to reduce water leakage and water supply interruptions in the clean water network and reduce the harmful impacts of rising sewer main failures in the wastewater network.
Monitoring for new leaks gives water utilities the maximum amount of time available to mitigate the consequences of a leak and can prevent a new leak from becoming background leakage.
Only the most effective pipeline leak detection solutions identify both newly forming and existing leaks across all areas of the water and wastewater networks.
With 30 years’ experience providing advanced leak detection to multiple industries, Atmos is combining its innovative technologies with Aquanexa’s skills, technical know-how and firsthand knowledge of the Italian region to implement solutions for Italian water utilities and keep penalties to a minimum.
Atmos’ Business Development Director for water Martin Duff said: “I’m thrilled to announce that we have appointed Aquanexa as a representative.
As pressure mounts on Italian water utilities to improve their network resilience, our leak detection solutions, paired with Aquanexa’s regional presence, means collectively we are best placed as a leading solutions provider.”
Aquanexa’s Head of Innovation Luca Berardi said: “Atmos will complete our valued added solutions portfolio to overcome the next challenges facing water utilities.”
Atmos’ CEO and Founder Dr Jun Zhang said: “Atmos remains committed to providing advanced leak detection solutions so utilities can meet their performance requirements, operate efficiently and address the needs of their customers.
We’re excited to bring our leak detection solutions to Italy’s water sector through this partnership with Aquanexa.”
Aquanexa's CEO Andrea Lanuzza said: “Thanks to Atmos’ innovative solutions, Aquanexa will boost its growth and will serve its clients as a one-stop shop for the full range of services needed for the management and digitalisation of water networks and infrastructures.”
