Nova Transportadora do Sudeste (NTS) visit Atmos UK
NTS is one of the latest Latin American pipeline companies to select Atmos as the simulation experts for its natural gas transmission network.
Recently, both Atmos and NTS attended and presented at this year’s Pipeline Technology Conference (ptc). Following the conference, NTS flew to Manchester to visit Atmos colleagues at our UK headquarters. Here’s how their week at Atmos unfolded.
A session on real-time transient modeling (RTTM) a gas pipeline simulation system
To make their research available to all Atmos colleagues, Renata Lins Reis (Operations - planning & scheduling) and Tiago Nery (Senior Operations Engineer) from NTS showcased their presentation from this year’s ptc.
The presentation covered the deployment of an RTTM gas pipeline simulation system and the process behind the selection and acceptance criteria that led them to select Atmos out of more than 12 competing suppliers.
From pilot project to integration with SCADA
Before selecting Atmos, a pilot project took place where suppliers’ proof of concepts were graded against the following criteria:
- Accuracy (real pipeline behavior)
- Look ahead and survival analysis
- Pig tracking
- Composition tracking
- Leak detection
- Software performance
Following their selection of Atmos as the winning RTTM gas pipeline simulation system supplier, next steps include tuning the Atmos SIM (Online) model, go-live, training NTS operators, control room procedures and the data transfer with SCADA.

Meeting with Atmos’ simulation team
During their visit to the UK, NTS met with our pipeline simulation team to discuss the many features of Atmos SIM which their network will have access to, including:
Online and offline modeling
The ability to simulate multiple different operating scenarios, such as compressor start and stop, on either online or offline systems
SCADA connectivity
Allowing for optimal monitoring, controlling and operating of the pipelines in the control room
Lookahead modeling
For anticipating risks and potential violations on a pipeline and prompting actions so appropriate measures can be taken to avoid future issues
Gas composition tracking
Simplifying how pipeline companies locate and provide accurate estimated arrival times for a gas, while also allowing for quality assessments to ensure a gas is delivered on-spec
Atmos SIM is in operation in over 20 countries, supporting approximately 45,000 km of pipelines globally.
About NTS
The NTS network is made up of more than 2,000 km of pipeline and has the highest capacity of all pipelines in Brazil, with a transport contractual capacity of 69 million m3 of gas per day. NTS transports natural gas through a pipeline system that crosses Brazil’s most industrialized region and has links to the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and São Paulo.
With NTS transporting gas to areas that are responsible for around 50% of gas consumption in Brazil, it’s understandable that they want to better understand the pipeline’s behavior, improve operations and maximize efficiency.
